Uganda National Parks Bwindi Impenetrable National park Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Rwenzori Mountain National Park Bwindi Impenetrable National parkBwindi Park is most famous for gorillas. There are hiking trails where you can see large variety of birds and primates. The trail hikes begin at 8:30am and 14:15 pm daily Accommodation: Accomodation In Bwindi is clean and simple, there are bandas in Buhoma as well for the low end / budget travelers plus 3 privately run campsites in the area along with some middle and up market tented camps too. Access: It’s about 6 Hours drive from Kampala to Kabale. Kabale to Buhoma Park hq takes 3-4 hours and may require 4WD. Kabale-Ruhija –Buhoma takes about 3 hours. The public does not use this road much and a 4wd is needed. A bus leaves from to Butogota daily at circa 06:30 am. Otherwise, you may travel by bus or by matatu from Kampala to Kabale for circa Ush 12,000. From Kabale you can hire a car for about Ushs 100, 000/= or take a pick up truck to Butogota. Public transport to Butogota is unpredictable, but the most common on the market days in kabala, it is from Butogota to Buhoma.
Kibale Forest National ParkGuided walks can be arranged and takes 2-3 hours. There are 12 species of primate found within the park, including the chimps Accommodation: Luxury safari tents, spacious forest cottages, a sky tree house and campsite at primate lodge Kibale. Access: The visitors centre is 36 kms south of Fort portal on a dirt road. Kidepo Valley National Park
The Kidepo Valley National Park is one of Uganda’s most spectacular parks. It is 1,442 sq km. Good walking safaris as well as day and night drives. Good chances of viewing lions, large herds of elephants and buffalo, leopard, cheetah, out standing birds of prey and ostrich. Accommodation: UWA Bandas and the up market Apoka Safari Lodge. Access: Schedule eagle Air flight once a week and charter flights, civil aviation manages an air strip 3km away from the park head quarters.
Mount Elgon National ParkMount Elgon is an extinct volcano and the 4th highest mountain in Eastern Africa, reaching 4312 metres. The park ahs magnificent waterfalls, caves, gorges and hot springs and its excellent for hiking. No technical climbing equipment or skills are required and all the major peaks are accessible to hikers. The full trekking circuit takes 4-5 days to complete and there are also 3 day trails, 3-7km long. The magnificent sipi falls are 66km north of Mbale, enroute to the forest exploration Centre and Kapkwata. Accommodation: There are 5 basic campsites around the trekking circuit. Simple accommodation is available at the Kapkwata Rest House and the Forest Exploration Centre at Kapwai. Book through the office in Mbale. Access: Good tar road from Kampala to Sipi.
Lake Mburo National ParkLake Mburo National Park is a very special place; every part of it is alive with variety, interest and color. It contains an extensive area of wetland and also harbors several species of mammals and the birds found nowhere else in Uganda Its sculptured landscape, with rolling hills and idyllic lake shores has a varied mosaic of habitats; forest galleries, seasonal and permanent swamps, and permanent swamps, and rich acacia-woodland, and grassy valleys which all support a weather of wildlife. Lake Mburo National park lies in a rain shadow between lake Victoria and the Rwenzori Mountains and receives an average of 800mm of rain a year. Being near the equator, the rainfall pattern is bimodal, with the long rains occurring from February to June, and the short erratic and unpredictable, but most rain tends to fall in April and November. Accommodation: Mihingo lodge and Kimbla Mantana camp are the major facilities in this park Access: Take the Masaka Road from Kampala, Traveling time to Lake Mburo National Park is around 4 hours.
Mgahinga Gorilla National ParkFound in the South west, bordering Rwanda and Congo. Mgahinga comprises of 3 extinct volcanoes and 3 extinct swamps. Along with Gorillas the park also supports Golden Monkeys, elephants, leopards and forest hogs The bird life recorded in this park includes 12 endemic species. Accomodation: 2 privately run campsites, one just outside the park gates and a private lodge on the edge of the park. The nearest hotel accommodation is in Kisoro. Access is via Kabale. Accesss: 13kms from Kisoro, access is via Kabale. The road is tar to Kabale and dirt onwards.
Murchison Falls National ParkMurchison falls is situated north of Masindi, 350kms from Kampala. Boat trips operate from Paara to the foot of Murchison falls and take around 3 hours. These enable you to see hippos, crocodiles and magnificent birdlife close up. There are also nature walks to the top of the falls and at Kaniyo pabidi, where you can trek chimpanzees. Kaniyo Pabidi is on the Masindi- Paraa road, 8kms from Kichumanyombo (Main) park gate. Accommodation: There is a basic campsite at the top of the falls and a privately run campsite with Bandas at Para. There are 2 lodges within the park and 1 just outside. Access: Kampala to Paraa takes around 5 hours and a 4 Wheal drive is recommended.
Queen Elizabeth National ParkQueen Elizabeth National park borders lakes Edward and George which are connected by the Kazinga channel that last about 2 hours. It has the Kyambura gorge where chimpanzee trekking is done. Accommodation: There is a safari lodge at Mweya, camping site and hostel on the Mweya peninsula. Near Ishasha there are campsites and Bandas. There is a lodge on a crater lake within the Maramagambo forest. Access: 438kms from Kampala on a good tarmac road that leads to the main gate turn off. From there it is 20kms on a dirt road.
Rwenzori Mountain National ParkRwenzori Mountain contains 6 snow capped peaks 3with glaciers. Excellent mountaineering and hiking opportunities are available. Semliki National Park220sq, km in the extreme west of Uganda is one of the richest areas for both flora and fauna in Africa, one of the newest parks in the country. Fantastic views, hot springs, forest walks, rich in bird viewing, elephant, buffalo, sitatungas and primates. Accomodation: Camping Access: Kampala to Semliki driving via Fort portal takes about 6.5 hours, 4x4 is recommended.
Semliki Wildlife ReserveNorth of fort portal is Uganda’s first protected are, 500sqkm, in the Western Rift Valley the reserve offers night game drives, chimpanzee trekking, boat trips on lake Albert to search for shoebill and water birds, hippopotamus, forest elephant, buffalo, leopards And lots of other primates. Accommodation: Up market Semliki Safari Lodge. Access: Charter flights, an air strip 2kms away from the Semliki driving via Fort portal takes about 6 hours.
