It has a altitude of 900m on Lake Edward to 1845m at the top of the eastern Escarpment of the western Rift. A walk down into the gorge may produce widespread forest species such as black and African Emerals Cuckoos, speckled Tinker bird, Hairy-breasted Barbet, Grey Wood pecker, Green Hylia and purple-headed starling although these are all more readily seen at Maramagambo. The attractive white spotted fluff tail is numerous in thickets along the river. Listen in moist grassland adjacent to the gorge, for the far carrying, metallic twink call of Broad-tailed Warbler.
